About this Class

I have always gravitated towards creating mixed media art. I like the satisfaction that comes from experimenting with different mediums. Traditionally, I have worked with collage and acrylic paints, sometimes ink and gouache, and have experimented with stamping unusual textures. You have seen me apply this rough framework to many projects. I work with the layers of background and then sketch out a fun illustration that embraces the look. Often, at this point, I use paint markers, watercolor pens and liners, and pencil crayons or even pastels to add details to the foreground items. Additional details can have me adding highlights and shadows with more paint markers or whatever is my tool of choice at that moment. The natural media version of this takes time; what I mean is that I can continue adding details for months as the whim strikes me. So, how does one translate this into a digital world?

This class, Newsprint Hearts Mixed Media in Procreate, will show you my digital interpretations of these steps, and how to use mixed-media brushes to create a layered and detail-rich illustration. My aim is to get the piece looking as natural as possible. In the class, I take you from start to finish in creating a complete abstract mixed media piece. I will be showing you all the steps and a bunch of the brushes I used, including many from the set of 30 I have provided. The art we’ll be creating is in layers, so will remain completely editable. One of my goals is to show you how we’ll be able to use a layer mask for the hearts, as well as numerous clipping masks. I am providing you with additional assets to help speed up the process for you. This includes brushes and the newsprint background, as well as a couple of heart-shaped brushes if you want to skip drawing those. I know you will have fun with this kit!

In this class I’ll walk you through:

  • my step-by-step method for working in digital mixed media
  • tips for creating compositions for a layered mixed-media look
  • my workflow for use of layers, layer masks and clipping masks
  • careful consideration of balance and unity
  • adding collage-like texture using brushes
  • methods for keeping the art fully editable for later adjustments and recoloring

Are you a fan of mixed-media work? Have you ever tried to accomplish this digitally? If not, this is a great introduction for you. With the provided assets and the step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to pull off this look in no time!

The key concepts I will include:

  • review of my mixed media brushes such as my large old house-paint brush and the blenders supplied
  • a look at compositional strategies to lay out your work in an interesting way
  • management of layers, clipping masks, and layer masks

Application of mixed-media techniques will give you a new way to work in Procreate. With mixed-media digital art there are so many possibilities. I am always satisfied with these pieces, and I use them to adorn my many POD products like greeting cards and fabrics!

Concepts covered include but are not limited to Procreate design, layer masks, layering of details and brushes, Procreate brush stamps, Procreate canvas settings, brush adjustments, clipping masks, the Gaussian Blur layer adjustment, mixed media in Procreate, adding mixed media ephemera, sizing of brushes, adding texture with brushes, procreate brushes for adding other interesting details, workflow best practices, painting best practices, Procreate composites, techniques with mixed media paints, and much more.

Project Description

To create this piece, you may use the supplied heart stamps or draw your own. You can start with a quick sketch or choose to go off-book and just go for it. Block in the main areas of color first using the techniques I outline in the first lesson. Use the sketch layer as a guide for the inking and follow instructions from the lessons. Once complete, add any little details to make it look more interesting, employing some of the suggestions I make in the lessons and playing with the supplied brushes. Use textures and details to add interest. When you feel the layout is somewhat complete, add shadows and highlight accents. Make the whole piece as abundant as possible. Enjoy the process! You will learn so much by experimenting, so don’t over-think it. I would even suggest duplicating your artwork to try two vastly different backgrounds. If you feel so inclined, try several pieces, one after the other, to really solidify your technique and style.
