About This Class

As I learn more about Art Licensing, I've come to understand the importance of a good portfolio. It's commonly advised to include lettering in your portfolio, but what if you're not skilled in hand-lettering? Not everyone has that talent. Well, I've found a helpful hack that makes it much easier. As a warm-up to the technique, I've been practicing one-word layouts. Let me walk you through the entire process.

Initially, I sketched out some bold letters by hand in my art journals. Then, I used paint markers, pencil crayons, and sometimes paints to add interest. The finishing touches involved enhancing the design with highlights and shadows using more paint markers. It's a rewarding yet time-consuming process. I liked the results, but asked myself “How can this be done digitally?”

In this class called "Fun and Easy Gradient Lettering in Procreate," I'll guide you step-by-step through my developed process. I'll provide a special lettering brush and explain how to use it effectively. During the final stage, I'll demonstrate techniques that directly translate my artwork into the digital realm. Instead of traditional art tools, I'll show you how to utilize digital brushes to create intricate, layered illustrations. In the class, I take time to help you if you are not comfortable with the hand-lettering part of the project.

The lettering we'll create is fully editable because it's composed in layers with clipping masks. One of my goals is to demonstrate how to create an alternative design with a completely different background. To expedite the process, I'm including various assets, including brushes, a couple of background options, and a texture overlay.

  • how to work with digital mixed media using my step-by-step method
  • using clipping masks and selections in Procreate
  • employing the selection process to automatically fill and recolor
  • tips for creating compositions with layered gradients
  • my workflow for utilizing layers and blending modes
  • adding interest by overlaying textures
  • methods to ensure the artwork remains fully editable for future adjustments and easy recoloring
  • and finally, how to work with reference materials without copying
