About This Class
A lemonade recipe is a lovely excuse to combine lettering, food illustration, and the kind of texture that makes digital artwork feel hand painted. In this Procreate class, we’ll create a playful recipe illustration with lemons, sugar cubes, a glass of lemonade, and a curled piece of peel. I’m keeping the drawing loose and a little naive, with visible brush strokes and lettering that still looks like my own handwriting.
We’ll start with lettering guidelines and the main title, then refine the smaller lettering and its spacing. From there, we’ll sketch the ingredients with QuickShape and paint them with Dry Ink, adding a cut lemon, sugar cubes, a glass of lemonade, a striped straw, translucent ice, and a shaded peel.
You’ll see me make adjustments as I work, from moving a letter to reshaping a lemon. Separate layers and groups leave room for those decisions. The class includes an introduction, five working lessons, and closing thoughts. Follow my example if it helps, but let your own handwriting and brush marks give your version its personality!
In this class I will walk you through…
- Planning your title with lettering guidelines
- Shaping and spacing hand lettering on separate layers
- Sketching ingredients with QuickShape and Distort
- Painting textured lemons and sugar cubes with Dry Ink
- Suggesting glass, ice, and a striped straw with transparency
- Building a curled lemon peel with clipping mask shadows
The Key Concepts I Will Include
- Lettering guidelines for baselines, lowercase heights, and capitals
- Brush size and stabilization for lettering versus textured painting
- QuickShape editing for lines, ovals, and polylines
- Dry Ink brushwork with visible gaps and textured edges
- Clipping masks for recoloring, shadows, and surface details
- White gaps, soft erasing, and reduced opacity to suggest glass and ice
You don’t have to get every shape right on the first try. Keep the pieces on their own layers, make the adjustments you need, and let some of those uneven marks remain part of the illustration.
